    Default Tiny meniscus injury...surgery??

    Hi,

I am looking for some help. I am not sure if i should get surgery on my meniscus injury, it has healed remarkably over the past few months to the point where i have absolutely no trouble on it whatsoever except for wen i try to fully flex my knee, i can flex it so much that my foot is about 2cm away from my back side but the last tiny bit a little pain is felt.

Doing a quadricep stretch is no problem as the heel of my foot does not go far enough to cause any pain just to give you an indication.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

I personally wouldn't get surgery. If on a daily basis it is not a problem, why put your body through the stress of an operation? Although arthroscopies for this sort of problem are very good now it could still set you back from where you are now with no guarantee that it will be much better afterwards.

I'm going to give the experience input, rather than the professional one !

In mid to late 50's I started having miniscus problems. The NHS, bless it, finally got me on the operating table (about 9 months wait), and it was 6 months for total recovery. Then the left knee went and something didn't settle so that was a second op and 2+ years out of action. Are you still thinking of having an operation?

Four years later the left knee then went again and I signed up once more for an op. but it took so long coming that the tear was re-absorbed after 15 months and at 67 I'm back to long days on the Scottish hills.

I read an American doctor somewhere on the web saying that an enormous percentage of arthroscopies for miniscus repairs are unnecessary - I looked to see if I'd bookmarked his site, but haven't unfortunately.

Take it extremely easy going back into your sport and build up all the muscle structure round the knee as much as possible to protect the joint.

    All the best
