Default What is this most likely?

I have pain coming from the inside part of my knee. It's about level with the middle of the knee cap and about 1"-1.5" to the right towards the inside when my leg is straightened.

I first injured it 3 years ago playing volleyball.

There was no one incident , just from repetitive use it seemed.

I havent done anything in three years and havent felt it until I started playing hockey.

Actually I didnt feel it until about a month after I started, after I did a big set of body weight squats.

I worked up to around 65 reps in a row and didnt feel anything. Then I did 85 one night and didnt feel anything when I was doing the set. For those of you that think these are easy, why dont u try it out Granted, the first few are easy, but once u get about 15 reps from your max, they BURN. Anyway, back on topic...

But the next day I would feel a little pain every once in a while throughout the day.

I rested it for a week , then last night during hockey it felt sore and very slight pain when I started , but seemed to loosen up and didnt feel anything by the end of the night.

Today I can feel something isn't 100% , but no pain which is good.

Any ideas as to what it might be?

    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi
You knee problem could be a number of things. But I think the most important thing to consider is that it is an overuse injury, a case of too much too soon.
The best advice I can give you is to rest for another week and gently stretch the hamstrings, quads and goin muscles 3 times a day. If there is no improvement in a week or so, visit a sports injury specialist

    I'd love to believe this....

but how do you rule out that I had an injury that needed to be fixed, it never was, and now it's being re-injured?

I quit playing volleyball 3 years ago because of this , it was too painful. The tendonitis I had was painful enough, but whatever this was was a different type of pain and too much to tolerate.

I stand by the fact that I think its an overuse injury. If there was no traumatic incident and it didn't hurt at the time of doing squats then there is nothing acute such as a torn muscle etc.

The likliest thing is that it is a biomechanical problem. By this I mean that there may be muscle imbalances, or overpronation at the foot for example which is causing problems at the knee.

Something like this can be quite complicated however and I would suggest you visit a sports injury professional who can assess your problem fully, including postural and biomechanical factors.

I stand by the fact that the injury was sustained 3 years ago from volleyball. The pain/area is the same. And what i've been doing recently, body weight squats are a far cry from the vertical jump training I used to. My legs were and are strong, played sports all my life, football in college, so I doubt it's a muscle imbalance.

I don't believe it's muscle imbalances or a RECENT overuse injury, I believe the problem is when you jump and spike in volleyball, if you're right handed your body is tilted and you come down with almost all the force being absorbed by the left leg. The tendonitis got steadily worse and worse, and then this other injury 'happened' , it seemed like an overuse , can't point to any one incident.

IMO it's definitely not muscular, either cartiledge or a ligament, or arthritis IMO.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your insights, I believe you're right, it could be anything and I won't know until I get some kind of imaging done. Which I will, I'll give it another month and see what happens though.
