    Question Odd outer thigh pain

    Hi!

    I was wondering if anyone could help me pinpoint a pain i've been getting. It only comes on when i'm sprinting full out, specifically when i'm pushing off the ball of my foot and the toes in mid stride. I get it in my left outside thigh, about half way between my hip bone and knee joint, and at the outermost point.
    The point of the pain is extremely localised, about 2 cm in diameter, and it's a burning sensation. It doesn't get particularly painful, as I ease off as soon as it happens, and it stops almost instantly. I've been stretching the outside of my quads a bit more, but it doesn't seem to have had much impact on it happening.
    I do a fair bit of running other than sprinting, and it never comes on in those sessions.

    Any help and suggestions would be appreciated!

    Hi

    The are you describe is in the IT band. This is common location for trigger points and so I wonder whether the pain is caused by a trigger point.

    If so, massage and stretching can really help to break this down. You can find an IT stretch here;

    The best thing to do is to get a sports masseur to do some massage. Although self-massage with a massage tool such as a 'knobble-it' or a foam roller can be very effective.

    Thanks for the prompt reply Heidi. I'll add that stretch to my daily repertoire & try to fit in a sports massage somewhere! I'll post a reply in a couple of days.

    Thanks again,
    Cian
