    Default Feeling uncomfortable

    Hi,

I am training to cycle Lands End to John O'Groats in September and have recently increased my weekly mileage to 130-150 mile per week. It may be co-incidence but I think not that I am having problems in the groin / pubic symphysis are. I wouldn't describe it as painful but I am feeling uncomfortable in the groin and around the genital area. I would describe it as an inflamatory condition rather than painful but it's quite debilitating after a while. It's not stopping me from sleeping but as soon as I'm up it gradually worsens.

I've decided to stop all exercise for a week to see if I notice any improvement and I've also booked an appointment with my doctor for Monday next week to check for any health issues - urinary infection or prostitus being possibilities.

In terms of history I've had sugery on both groins by Jerry Gilmore (Gilmore's Groin) but this was 15 years ago - can these conditions return ?

Could you advise what other conditions it could be, what anti inflamatory tablets I could take?

I also want to book in to see a sports injury consultant - where would I find details of consultants in the Kent / London area?

Any advice would be welcome as it's starting to impact my training for the big ride in September.

    Thanks.

    Chris

You are right to rest it and to visit your Doctor for a check up. Discomfort in this area could be so many things, both injury-wise and health-wise and so it is important to get checked out.
I think if you have had previous surgery to the area then there is always a risk of future problems, especially when undertaking such a big challenge.
GIlmores groin again is a possibility, as is Osteitis Pubis: http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/frontthigh/ostitispubis.htm
You may be able to find the details of a specialist in our clinic directory:

    Default Feeling Uncomfortable

    Hiedi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I've been taking Ibuprofen for 2 days now and the uncomfortable feeling has subsided so I assume that was inflammatory around the injury. I can now more clearly feel where the problem is - it's in my left groin, not painful but a dull ache.

Does that help to identify potential injury?

Is it uncomfortable to press the tender area - can you find a sore spot?
Have you rested and gently stretched it out?

    Default Feeling Uncomfortable

    Hi Hiedi,

I've rested up for a week and have been taking Ibropofen. The uncomfortable feeling has subsided and I can now feel where the strain is - left hand side of pubic bone. Stopped Ibropofen for 1 day and uncomfortable feeling back ! I'm seeing a physio tonight but does this update give you any clearer picture of what this injury may be?

I haven't done any stretching - can you point me to some exercise routines I can do.

    Thanks.

    Chris

    Hi
The area you describe suggests either the rectus femoris or iliopsoas muscles. Wait to speak to the physio to confirm the injury and then they should give you exercises to help.
