Default intense pain on twisting the hip

I have had an injury for 5 months now.
the symptoms are a severe pain in near the hip joint on the inside of my left leg. I can go a day without triggering it but when I catch it it is excruciating. for a 30 seconds that goes again
it is triggered by twisting the hip outwards loaded or unloaded.
gestures like getting out of a chair sideways can trigger it.
if a straighten the leg and turn my foot in and out it is OK
if the knee is bent and the leg rotated out the pain is worst
if the the knee is bent and the rotation is inward it also hurt but not as badly.
I can cycle hard with no problems but I have to very cautious getting of and on the bike.
gentle running is ok but any kind of sidestep is agony
I am worried that it has gone on for so long, My GP did not take it seriously and just told me to take pain killers.
Any ideas what the problem may be? and how to deal with it?
    Thanks

I think you need an assessment from a sports injury professional as the hip joint and groin is a very complex area and it is hard to give you an idea of what may be going on.
