    Default Swelling on right hip

    Hi there,

Just looking for some help in a matter concerning my 17 year old son, he has had a hip pain and it clicks when he raises it and rotates it, it has stopped him playing football and he recently had an MRI scan with the dye and it showed up small excess of fluid on right hip but no 'mechanical cause identified' There are no tears or any signs of impingement. His club have stated it needs further investigation and we need to follow this up.
Has anybody got an idea as to what it might be and what would correct it?

    Thanks

    Hi
If there is no obvious cause on the MRI then I would imagine the cause is something that cannot be displayed on an MRI - in other words not actual damage to a structure. My first thought is a muscle imbalance around the hip. Common problems are tight groin muscles and weak glute (bum) muscles.
To know for sure you would need a full assessment of the hip from a physio/sports therapist etc. They will be able to tell you which muscles are tight and which are weak and give him an exercise program to work on.

    Heidi,

Many thanks for your post. He seen a physio and she gave him excercises to tighten the bum muscles as well as working on the right hip, they reckon he could be back playing in six weeks, fingers crossed.

    Thanks again
