    Default young athlete hip pain

My daughter is 13 and is currently involved in Soccerand track and trains daily. For a few weeks she has been experiencing moderate to severe pain after training and matches. She ices regularly, but is very reluctant to give anything up.

The pain is on the outside of her hip at the top of the hip bone and hurts to run / walk as well as to the touch. Does anyone have an explanation of what the pain would be caused by and could she be doing long term damage by choosing to accept the pain and play through it. The smart solution seems to be to force her to rest it, but is it necessary?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Is there any swelling or a palpable lump? If so could be bursitis?

Its never a good idea to run through pain, pain is there for a reason and is usually to tell us there is some form of damage at the site of pain.

I would recommend visiting a physical therapist or someone who can fully assess your daughters problem, especially including a gait analysis (whilst running) to check if she has any biomechanical problems.

    Thank you for the reply,

There is no lump or bruising or any visible or palpable signs. She did have a problem with the growth plates in her heals a couple of years ago(fractured). I don't know if that would have had any affect on her mechanics. She has good technique when she runs and played the fall season and two indoor sessions with no problems. This problem is pretty recent. We have convinced her to rest it for at least a week and continue to ice to see if there is any improvement. There are a couple of tournaments coming up that we will have to tie her up to stop her from playing in.

    Thanks again!
