Default R hip ache that radiates to groin

HI,

I am a distance runner and have had a "achey" hip and leg for the last few months mostly during my runs or after a hard run. Now in the last few days this ache is constant and deep and I am having sharp pains that radiate to my groin when I transition from a sitting to standing or when I get up out of bed. These sharp pains are also present during my runs. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi,

Sounds possibly like increased tension in the gluteal muscles causing pressure on the nerves which pass through and shooting pain through the leg.

If I'm right, you need to get a gait analysis to check why this is happening. It might be overpronation of the feet, a leg length discrepancy or weakness in the hip abductors amongst other things.

You will also need some deep tissue massage to the glutes, hamstrings and groin muscles to loosen and stretch out the muscles. Stretching these muscle groups 3 times a day should also help.

Have a look here for some stretching ideas:

The most important thing is to get your gait and biomechanics checked, coz no matter how much stretching and massage you have, if other problems remain untreated the pain will persist.

Good luck!
