Podiatrist on Blisters
Sports Podiatrist Ian Sadler talks about blisters and the prention of blisters.
Podiatrist Ian Sadler talks to sportsinjuryclinic.net about how to prevent blisters occurring and how you can treat existing blisters.
Blisters result from friction amongst the different layers of skin. Essentially this is a friction burn, which produces fluid and results in the 'bubble' effect we all know. The blister itself is natures way of healing the 'burn'. If you can just let this run its course and not apply any more pressure/friction to it then this is the best way of treating them.
However, most people will want to continue to run, or play whatever sport or daily activity. In this case, Ian suggests removing all of the skin and covering it with a sterile dressing.
To prevent blisters, Ian says you should always start with short runs when you buy new trainers, and should pre-empt any blisters by covering the 'hot-spots' with tape, blister plasters, or using double layer socks.
