Choosing shoes for plantar fasciitis
What are the best shoes for plantar fasciitis? Here are some guidelines about what to look for in shoes to help with relief the most common cause of heel pain.
Make sure the shoes are not flat and have a good, solid arch support. Shoes with a good grip on the sole are better than smooth, leather soles. Don't walk around barefoot! Even when just at home - have a specific pair of shoes which are only used inside
Make sure your shoes fit comfortably - tight fitting shoes cause the foot to be squashed up in the shoe! Wear lace-up shoes rather than sandals or slip-on. The foot stays in place better in lace-up shoes.
Don't wear high heels! They cause tightness in the calf muscles which only makes the condition worse. Small heels, up to an inch, are ok. Wear shoes which have a solid heel cup to prevent the heel slipping around in the shoe.
Replace your shoes regularly, as soon as you think they may be getting worn out. If you are at all unsure about which type of footwear to go for, speak to a podiatrist who will be able to recommend something for you.
There are shoes available which are marketed specifically as 'plantar fasciitis' shoes'. Whilst these are often very good, supportive shoes, ensure that you still think about the guidelines listed here when deciding to purchase them. Just because they say they are for plantar fasciitis doesn't mean they are ideal for you!
