Expert Interview - Chiropractor on rotator cuff

Chiropractor Dr Maria Madge talks about rotator cuff injury.

The shoulder has a number of injuries which commonly occur, including frozen shoulder and rotator cuff injuries. This covers a number of muscles which attach around the shoulder. The injury usually occurs after a trauma or fall, causing a stretching and tearing of the muscle. The neck may also be involved. It is painful to lift or rotate the arm.

A Chiropractor will start at the top of the neck and work down to address each joint and establish if it is working correctly. Then they will treat the tear itself. This may start with a strapping or a sling to protect the injury.

Then soft tissue work such as massage and mobilisation, followed by exercises to re-establish the strength back in the muscles. It is generally a weak area and if you loose any range of motion at the shoulder it can deteriorate very quickly and be difficult to get this back.
