Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Explained in a Minute!

Video explaining Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a minute.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition which affects the wrist and hand. It is caused by compression of the Median nerve where it passes through the carpal tunnel. This compression can be caused by a previous traumatic wrist injury, repetitive use of the wrist, pregnancy and the use of vibrating machinery.

Symptoms include a dull pain in the wrist which may radiate pain into the fingers. Tingling or burning sensations and weakness in the hand and fingers are common. Symptoms are often worse at night.

Treatment is initially conservative, involving rest and cold therapy. Anti-inflammatories may be prescribed. A wrist support or splint may also be worn to partially immobilise the wrist.

Once symptoms improve, a rehab programme to stretch and strengthen the wrist muscles is used. If conservative treatments fail, steriod injections may be used. Surgery is the final option in treatment.
