Distal Radial Epiphysis Injury

The epiphysis is the name given to the rounded end of a long bone - also sometimes known as the growth plate. Distal means towards the bottom end of so a distal radial epiphysis injury is an injuy to the end of the radius bone at the wrist.

It more commonly affects young athletes (usually aged 6 to 10 years old) particularly gymnasts. It can also be caused by falling onto an outstretched hand.

Symptoms of a Distal Radial Epiphysis Injury

  • Wrist pain especially when the wrist is dorsiflexed (bent upwards with the palm facing down).
  • There may be tenderness and swelling around the end of the bone.

Treatment

Treatment includes:

  • Rest from aggravating activities.
  • Adaptation of training programs to allow rest.
  • Strengthening of the forearm flexor muscles.
  • Possible splinting or casting in severe cases.
