Press Test For TFCC Tear

The “press test” helps identify tears in the Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC), which is a structure in the wrist that stabilizes and cushions the joint. The TFCC is crucial for the smooth movement of the wrist, particularly in rotation (turning movements).

Here’s how the press test is typically performed:

  1. Position: The patient sits or stands with their elbow flexed at a 90-degree angle and forearm in a neutral position.
  2. Action: The patient places the palms together in a “praying” position. They then press the palms and fingers firmly together.
  3. Evaluation: The test is considered positive if this action causes pain on the ulnar side (the side of the little finger) of the wrist, which is where the TFCC is located. The pain is indicative of a potential tear or degeneration in the TFCC.

The press test is simple and non-invasive, and it can be a useful initial assessment tool. However, it’s not definitive. If a TFCC tear is suspected based on this test or symptoms, further diagnostic methods, such as an MRI or arthroscopy, may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the injury.
