Bruised Wrist

Bruised Wrist

A bruised wrist is also known as a wrist contusion. This occurs after an impact to the wrist which causes bleeding under the skin. The area will develop swelling and be very tender, which can be eased by applying ice. Medical treatment is often not needed, but it should be monitored for any worsening symptoms.

Bruised wrist symptoms

Symptoms of a bruised wrist include obvious pain on impact at the time of injury. The wrist will be tender to touch and rapid swelling will develop with bruising appearing over time. There will be a reduced range of motion of the wrist which will be painful to move.

In most cases, a wrist contusion will heal by itself with no need for medical treatment. Rest the wrist and apply an ice pack or other cold therapy product to slow bleeding and swelling.

Wear a compression bandage or support to reduce bleeding and swelling. Elevate the wrist above the head for the same reasons. A Doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medication and symptoms will usually ease within a few days. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

Watch out for neural and vascular symptoms in the hand or fingers such as tingling, numbness, cold, pale skin or a weak pulse. If you notice any of these symptoms, visit your Doctor as soon as possible.
