Our step-by-step Ankle fracture rehabilitation program is created by elite-level sports physiotherapist Paul Tanner. He bases it on what he does with his professional footballers, but adapted to be used by anyone.
Who is it suitable for?
This program is suitable for anyone suffering from pain, stiffness, and weakness after a period of immobility post ankle fracture. It is very important that you follow the advice of your consultant and only progress through the phases as pain allows.
What equipment do I need?
- Hot & cold therapy wrap
- Exercise resistance bands/light dumbbells
- Wobble board or cushion
Please get in touch if you have any other questions.
Program structure
The program consists of 5 phases:
Phase 1
Acute Management – use this phase if your ankle remains swollen, red, hot, and/or painful.
Phase 2
This is the early Rehabilitation/Re-load. The aim of phase 2 is trying to introduce more load and strength into the ankle.
Phase 3
Phase 3 is the Mid-Rehabilitation – increase capacity.
Phase 4
Phase 4 is the late rehabilitation stage.
Phase 5
Maintenance phase. The aim of phase 5 is to mitigate the risk of future injury. We have selected a few exercises from phases 3 and 4 to incorporate into your normal training routine. However, if you have particular favourites or particular areas you feel need improving then feel free to include or replace exercises.
Treatment & exercises
We explain when and how to use treatment options such as rest and active rest, cold therapy and foam rolling. Mobility, stretching, strengthening, movement control (proprioception) and functional exercises become progressively more challenging as you work through the phases.
