Ankle deformity refers to an abnormal or misshapen appearance or alignment of the ankle joint. It involves a structural change in the bones, joints, or soft tissues surrounding the ankle.
Ankle deformities may be present at birth (e.g. clubfoot), or degenerative changes as a person ages. However, the most common causes in sport are dislocations and severe fractures. Arthritis and sometimes ligament sprains also make the ankle appear deformed.
