Thigh Pain

Common, and less common causes of thigh pain including hamstring, groin and quadriceps muscle strains, compartment syndromes, contusions and fractures.

Most Common Thigh Injuries

hamstring strain

Hamstring Strain

A tear in the muscles at the back of the thigh, often during sprinting. Causes sudden sharp pain and difficulty stretching or running.

quad strain

Quad Strain

A tear of the muscles at the front of the thigh. Symptoms include sudden sharp pain when sprinting or jumping.

groin strain

Groin Strain

A tear of one of the adductor muscles on the inside of the thigh. Caused by sudden movement or change of direction.

thigh contusion

Thigh Contusion

A direct blow or impact to the muscle causing pain and loss of function. Also called a Charley Horse or Dead Leg.

When should I see a Doctor?

It is rare that thigh injuries need to be seen by a doctor. Most are muscular injuries that heal given the appropriate treatment and rest. However, there are certain circumstances and conditions in which case it is a good idea to seek medical advice:

  • Very severe pain following a high-impact collision or impact
  • Inability to straighten or bend your knee and a palpable gap
  • Altered sensation
  • Long term injury or one which recurs
thigh pain - when to see a doctor

Front Thigh Pain

Sports injuries causing pain at the front of the thigh.

quad strain

Quad Strain

A tear of the muscles at the front of the thigh. Symptoms include sudden sharp pain when sprinting or jumping.

thigh contusion

Thigh Contusion

A direct blow or impact to the muscle causing pain and loss of function. Also called a Charley Horse or Dead Leg.

rec fem tendon strain

Rectus Femoris Tendon Strain

Pain at the top of the front thigh where the rectus femoris muscle originates. It’s difficult to distinguish between a tendon strain and an avulsion injury.

femur stress fracture

Femur Stress Fracture

A hairline fracture of the femur (thigh bone). Although quite rare, it is caused by prolonged overuse. Pain develops gradually as a dull ache, which intensifies if a bending force is applied to the femur.

Back Thigh Pain

Sports injuries causing pain at the back of the thigh.

hamstring strain

Hamstring Strain

A tear in the muscles at the back of the thigh, often during sprinting. Causes sudden sharp pain and difficulty stretching or running.

shin splints

Thigh Contusion

A direct blow or impact to the muscle causing pain and loss of function. Also called a Charley Horse or Dead Leg.

hamstring strain

Cramp

A painful involuntary spasm or contraction of the muscle, very common in the hamstring muscles. Cramp often follows a bout of hard, or unaccustomed exercise.

Achilles tendonitis

Hamstring Avulsion

An avulsion strain occurs when the tendon tears, pulling a small part of the bone away with it. This is more common in younger athletes aged 14 to 18 years old. Symptoms are similar to a hamstring tendon strain.

Referred Pain

Pain in the hamstring region which originates from the lower back, sacroiliac joints, or buttocks. Symptoms are gradual onset pain, usually less severe than a hamstring strain.

Ischiogluteal bursitis

Ischiogluteal bursitis/tendinopathy

Causes pain at the origin of the hamstring muscles at the buttocks. Bursitis is inflammation of the small sac of fluid between the tendon and bone. It is often difficult to distinguish between the two.

hamstring strain

Posterior Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndromes occur when the muscle swells up too big for the sheath that surrounds it. As a result, pressure increases causing pain. Symptoms include a dull pain in the back of the thigh, cramps, and weakness.

Hamstring tendons

Thigh Hamstring Muscles

Although not a specific injury, nor a cause of posterior thigh pain, tight hamstring muscles are common in athletes. This may make you more prone to other injuries.

Groin Pain

Sports injuries causing pain in the groin.

hamstring strain

Groin Strain

Pain in the hamstring region which originates from the lower back, sacroiliac joints, or buttocks. Symptoms are gradual onset pain, usually less severe than a hamstring strain.

shin splints

Adductor Tendonitis

Causes pain at the origin of the hamstring muscles at the buttocks. Bursitis is inflammation of the small sac of fluid between the tendon and bone. It is often difficult to distinguish between the two.

hamstring strain

Hernia

Compartment syndromes occur when the muscle swells up too big for the sheath that surrounds it. As a result, pressure increases causing pain. Symptoms include a dull pain in the back of the thigh, cramps, and weakness.

Achilles tendonitis

Inguinal Distruption

Although not a specific injury, nor a cause of posterior thigh pain, tight hamstring muscles are common in athletes. This may make you more prone to other injuries.
