A common cause of a lump or bump below the knee cap is Osgood Schlatter disease. This is an overuse injury which affects children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 15 years old.
The patella tendon attaches to the shin at the bony protrusion at the top of the shin, just below the knee. This part of the tibia bone is called the tibial tuberosity.
In children and adolescents it becomes inflammed as the tendon pulls away from the bone. As a result, over time new bone growth occurs causing the bump below the knee.
