Achilles bursitis or Retrocalcaneal bursitis is inflammation of the bursa. It is especially painful when running uphill or on soft surfaces. You may also feel a spongy resistance at the back of the heel when pressing in on both sides. Haglund’s syndrome is when Achilles bursitis and tendonitis occur at the same time.
Insertional Achilles tendonitis occurs in adults with inflammation and pain at the point the Achilles inserts into the heel. Sever’s disease has the same symptoms but occurs in children or adolescents and is growth related.
