Pain under the heel

The most common cause of pain under the heel is Plantar fasciitis, followed by a Bruised heel. Plantar fasciitis has symptoms of heel pain first thing in the morning, or after a period of rest. Pain reduces once you move around and warm up the tissues. A Heel spur is a tiny bone growth under the heel and may or may not occur at the same time as Plantar fasciitis.

A Bruised heel is likely to feel better after rest and first thing in the morning. However, becomes worse the more you run or walk.

Calcaneal stress fracture has symptoms very similar to a bruised heel. Pain increases the more you are on your feet. A stress fracture is not likely to show up on an X-ray until it begins to heal and needs a much longer rest period.

Nerve impingements which cause pain under the heel include Lateral plantar nerve entrapment and Tarsal tunnel syndrome.
