Jumpers Knee Taping

A simple taping technique that can be used to support the patella tendon when rehabilitating Jumper's knee (patella tendonitis).

The following guidelines are for information purposes only. We recommend seeking professional advice before beginning rehabilitation.

The Aim of Patella Tendonitis Taping:

The aim of this taping is to provide support to the patella tendon and take some of the stress off the patella tendon insertion into the shin bone (tibia).

What is required?

  • 3.8 cm (1.5 inch) non-stretch zinc oxide tape.

Step 1

  • The athlete is sat on the floor with the knee bent to a right angle and the foot flat on the floor.
  • Underwrap may be used around the knee under the taping, for comfort and to stop the tape pinching. If the leg is very hairy it may be best to shave around the knee.

Step 2

  • Starting on the outside of the leg pass the tape around the leg, immediately under the knee.

Step 3

  • As the tape passes around the front of the knee the second time it can be twisted to give extra support. Continue wrapping the tape around the knee a couple of times.

Step 4

  • Apply one final wrap around the knee without twisting the tape as it passes under the patella.
