Achilles Pain Calculator

The VISA-A (Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment – Achilles) questionnaire is a validated tool used by healthcare professionals to assess the severity of Achilles tendinopathy and monitor recovery over time.
Achilles Pain Score Calculator (VISA-A)
In this questionnaire, pain refers specifically to pain in the Achilles tendon region. A higher score is better. A score of 100 means no Achilles pain or limitation.
What is the VISA-A Questionnaire?
It consists of eight questions covering common symptoms such as morning stiffness, pain during daily activities, and the ability to participate in sport and exercise. Your answers are converted into a score out of 100, with higher scores indicating better Achilles tendon function and fewer symptoms.
How is the VISA-A Score Interpreted?
- 100 points: No pain or functional limitations.
- 90–99 points: Excellent function with minimal symptoms.
- 70–89 points: Mild Achilles tendon symptoms.
- 50–69 points: Moderate symptoms affecting sport and exercise.
- Below 50 points: Significant pain and disability.
What is a Normal VISA-A Score?
People with a healthy Achilles tendon typically score close to 100. Athletes with Achilles tendinopathy often score significantly lower, depending on the severity of their symptoms and how much their condition affects training and competition.
How Often Should I Complete the Questionnaire?
The VISA-A questionnaire is most useful when repeated regularly to track progress. Many clinicians recommend completing it every 2 to 4 weeks during rehabilitation. Improvements in your score can help demonstrate that your tendon is responding positively to treatment, even if symptoms fluctuate from day to day.
Important
The VISA-A questionnaire is designed to monitor Achilles tendon pain and function. It should not be used as a substitute for a professional diagnosis. If you have severe pain, sudden onset symptoms, significant swelling, or suspect an Achilles tendon rupture, seek medical advice promptly.
