The static hamstring stretch stretches the hamstring muscles with minimal or no movement. It forms part of our hamstring strain rehabilitation program. You can perform these exercises in a standing position or seated if you prefer.
How to perform a static hamstring stretch
Ease into the stretch and hold the position without forcing it. You should feel a gentle stretch at the back of your thigh.
You can perform this stretch on a bench, table or the floor, depending on what feels most comfortable.
This variation targets the hamstring muscle fibres higher up the thigh. In contrast, a hamstring stretch performed lying on your back with the knee bent places more emphasis on the fibres closer to the knee.
