Sports massage can be used for treating sacroiliac joint pain, to loosen the surrounding lower back and buttock muscles.

1. Effleurage

Effleurage is the starting stroke of all massages. It spreads the oil and starts to warm up the tissues. It is a stroking technique where pressure is applied in the direction of the heart and eased off when returning the hands to the starting point.

2. Petrissage

Petrissage is a kneading type technique which further warms and loosens the muscles. Either the palms of the hands or the knuckles can be used.

3. Stripping

Stripping muscles is a common used technique which helps to iron out any knots or scar tissue. It can be used on the upper glutes from the spine outwards, or on the spinal muscles, from the base of the back upwards.

4. Circular Frictions

The thumb can be used in a circular motion to help break down adhesions and scar tissue etc. This motion and stripping are often used alternatively to work deeply into the muscle tissues.
