Expert Interview Calf Strain Massage

Susan Findlay of the North London School of Sports Massage talks about the use of sports massage in treating calf strains.

A massage therapist can help with the treatment of a calf strain, by seeing which muscles are tight and flushing out any waste products and breaking down any adhesions. This should only be done after the acute phase (where bleeding is present) has passed.

Initially the treatment should be RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. Frequency depends on the grade (severity) of the injury. A mild strain may be ok again in a couple of sessions. More severe injuries may take longer.
